Language pet peeve

The use of the phrase "all of a sudden" and people saying "all the sudden".

I heard this phrase being uttered by a seeming intelligent guest on one of the morning shows on NH Public Radio this morning and I just cringed. It just didn't sound right. Am I being too picky? Maybe it's just all the nuns from my elementary and high schools haunting me from my English classes.
